June 25, 2012 NYC FAQ
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q. Is this a new program in NYC?
A. The SmartBooting program is new to the City, but
scofflaw enforcement through the NYC Marshals and the NYC Sheriff
has been in effect for over 30 years. With this new approach, the
City is making it easier for the scofflaw motorists to reclaim
their vehicles.
Q. Must everyone take the SmartBoot off
themselves?
A. No. It is not a requirement, but the self-release
option is the fastest and easiest way for motorists to regain the
use of their vehicles. It can save the motorist's hours of waiting
for an assisted release.
Q. How do I pay?
A. A motorist may pay over the phone with the PayLock Help
Center with a credit card, debit card, electronic money transfer or
in-person, at the City's Parking Violations Bureau Customer Service
Centers.
Q. Do I have to pay a deposit to remove the boot
myself?
A. No. SmartBoots need to be returned within 24 hours
after removal or a late fee of $25 may be charged. No deposit is
taken, and it does not cost anything extra to the motorist if the
boot is returned on time.
Q. Where can SmartBoots be returned?
A. There will be multiple locations in each Borough that
will be open at convenient hours where motorists can drop off the
device.
Q. What are the hours of the program?
A. Scofflaw enforcement may take place 24/7 365.
